"Honesty is the best policy" is not just a saying!

Honesty is the best policy
Why exactly does it pay to be honest?

It pays YOU because it carries with it every good feeling which permeates our existence...

Conscience... is our guide, imagine going on a hike in the Amazon jungle without a guide? Not only will you get hopelessly lost but you could possibly get badly hurt!

Guides are all-important in a strange environment and life is a strange environment!

It should be understood by all that life's purpose is to be happy and dishonesty is counterproductive to this end.

Being honest, to yourself to your purpose, to your family, friends and to the earth as well as to your God will bring to you the essence of life!

May I tell white lies?
You can do anything you want but...

Whatever you do is your decision and choice and only you know how or why you do things.

However, if you live with other people, whether in a relationship or at school or work, you will need to develop "people skills!"

"People skills" are like oil in machinery, they smooth lifes journey. Trust is critical in people skills!

White lies or rainbow coloured lies are not the issue, it is what we are hiding and why...

Honesty is integral with all other values and to the degree we develop these in balance the better equipped we will be to live a happier and healthier life.

There are times when telling the blatant truth could be more harmful than if we were to descibe a situation with tact and diplomacy. To tell a child how it's cherished pet was ripped to pieces by a neighbours dog would be unkind and hurtful. Thus by telling the brutal truth we are causing emotional harm which is counter-productive to showing love and kindness! Nonetheless, it is never acceptable to tell lies if you are trying to cover for yourself. You will inevitably lose trust somewhere down the line!

It is good to keep in mind that people are not fools and generally know when they are being lied to.

Nonetheless, truth is paramount in building trust and therefore, rather than look for artful ways to hide our wrongdoing, we would benefit more in the long term by being honest in all matters.

Remember, the need to tell the truth becomes an easy matter the less we have to hide!

Living with values will considerably reduce the need to hide anything. There is no law against being kind and considerate or empathic and forgiving etc. So it makes sense to endeavour to master these beneficial human values. (see why learn values)

Being honest with oneself!
We can fool some of the people some of the time but...

We can't fool all the people all the time,

The worst person you ever want to fool is yourself!

Why?

Mainly because of the ill-effect on our self-esteem!

If you are aware of fooling yourself, you know how terrible that is. You come to realise you are not who you say you are. So then who are you? This if not defined will keep you in "tartarus" until you learn to be honest.
